State Rep. Mike Harris this month was recognized by the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) for voting with main street businesses 100% of the time this legislative session. His work includes supporting efforts benefiting local businesses and blocking partisan attacks on independent operations.

“Small, main street businesses are what make every Michigan community so special,” said Harris, R-Waterford. “What would our community be without its local shops and restaurants, and family-owned businesses? These are the places where our friends and neighbors come together and create the communities we all love. I’m honored to protect our small businesses and will always vote to help and protect their honest work.”

NFIB bases its voting report on a number of various pro-small business votes; one of the most notable votes considered was changes to the Earned Sick Time Act, which enacted common-sense reforms to Michigan’s paid sick time policies. The legislation protected local businesses from extreme mandates that would’ve forced many to shut down while also ensuring Michigan workers still receive quality leave time benefits.

“Most importantly, our members appreciate the lawmakers who voted to pass much-needed changes to the Earned Sick Time Act, which helped make the law more manageable for small employers,” said Amanda Fisher, NFIB Michigan State Director.
