Speaker Hall on Earmark Transparency
RELEASE|February 5, 2025
Contact: Matt Hall

Today, Speaker Matt Hall released the following statement in response to Governor Whitmer embracing House Republicans’ transparency measures:

It’s great to see Governor Whitmer embracing the ideas and leadership of House Republicans. For seven years, Lansing has failed to take meaningful action on government transparency, but today, we’re seeing real progress — progress that is happening because House Republicans took the lead. This is an issue we prioritized, and now Governor Whitmer is following our lead to deliver real accountability for the people of Michigan.

With the right leader, me, focused on the right issues, you will see productive bipartisanship that delivers results on core priorities. My prediction is that Leader Brinks will soon see the light and join us in ushering in a new era of leadership that changes the culture of Lansing.

House Republicans are driving the conversation on transparency measures, and under House Rules, we can advance this priority without needing the Senate’s agreement — if they want to pass a bill that hides special interest funding, we will not take it up. While their support would be welcome, we are committed to putting Michigan families first. It’s a great step forward that the governor is aligning with our vision — it’s proof that strong, Michigan First leadership makes a difference.

Just as we’ve done with transparency, we’ve also led the charge on fixing our roads with a common-sense, no-tax-increase approach that works for Michigan families and taxpayers. It’s encouraging to see the governor recognizing the value of our proposals and working with us to get things done. I look forward to seeing the governor’s detailed roads plan when she is ready to release it.”
