Senate advances Rep. Cavitt’s plan to save our veterans
RELEASE|June 3, 2026
Contact: Cam Cavitt

State Rep. Cam Cavitt testified in front of the Senate Committee on Veterans and Emergency Services in support of his plan to help keep Michigan veterans safe and support their families.

“Michigan veterans have dedicated their lives to service,” said Cavitt (R-Cheboygan). “We will never be able to repay that debt, but we can do everything in our power to make sure that we are protecting our veterans here at home.”

HB 5387, introduced by Cavitt, would establish a Green Alert program, which would use existing alert infrastructure to notify the public when a veteran or at-risk service member goes missing, similar to Amber Alerts.

“This will support veterans and families in a time of crisis,” Cavitt said. “Programs like this have been tried in other states, and they have had clear results showing that these systems help communities find veterans faster. This is a simple program that keeps our veterans safe and treats them with the respect that they deserve.”

Cavitt was also joined by others speaking in support of the legislation, including Devon Kearney, a Navy Veteran, and Tim Poxson, an Air Force Veteran and the Legislative Chair of the American Legion Department of Michigan.
