Caucus to champion officer safety, public safety policy, and strong support for Michigan law enforcement
State Rep. Mike Harris today announced the formation of the Michigan House Law Enforcement Caucus, a coalition of lawmakers committed to supporting Michigan’s police officers, sheriffs’ deputies, troopers, dispatchers, and corrections personnel amid rising anti-law enforcement rhetoric and increasingly dangerous conditions on the job.
The caucus will advocate for legislation that strengthens public safety, supports recruitment and retention, improves officer wellness resources, and pushes back against policies that undermine policing and embolden criminals.
“Law enforcement in this country is being villainized for political profit,” said Harris, who will chair the new caucus. “Because of the attacks on law enforcement, people who wear the badge are being asked to do more with less, stand in more danger, and tolerate attacks that would never be accepted in any other profession. That ends now. This caucus was formed to deliver a clear message: Michigan will back the blue.”
Members of the caucus say they are responding directly to what many officers have reported statewide: fewer recruits entering the profession, more resignations, and worsening public hostility fueled by national activist movements and soft-on-crime political agendas.
“Michigan families want safe neighborhoods,” said Rep. Brian BeGole, newly appointed vice-chair of the caucus. “They want crimes investigated, violent offenders held accountable, and officers supported, not second-guessed into paralysis. It is time for this Legislature to stop catering to political narratives and start protecting the people who protect us.”
Caucus Priorities
The Michigan House Law Enforcement Caucus will prioritize:
- Officer safety and enhanced penalties for assaults on law enforcement
- Recruitment and retention initiatives, including incentives and training support
- Law enforcement wellness and mental health resources
- Direct funding and resources to local departments and sheriffs’ offices
- Policies that uphold the rule of law, protect victims, and reduce repeat offenses
Membership
The caucus is composed of House members with a demonstrated record of support for law enforcement and public safety policy, including lawmakers with professional backgrounds in law enforcement and public safety.
