A pair of House Republican legislators have introduced bills supporting Michigan’s volunteer firefighters and emergency services personnel.
House Bills 4431-32, introduced by state Reps. Matthew Bierlein and Steve Frisbie, establish a $2,500 refundable state income tax credit for these tireless and dedicated public servants.
“Volunteer firefighters and EMS providers are the backbone of emergency response in many of our communities, especially in rural areas and small towns,” said Bierlein, of Vassar. “These heroes often respond to emergencies at all hours, sacrificing their time, energy and many times even their own safety – all without expecting significant compensation. They put their lives on hold and take time away from their families to assist ours.
“Unfortunately, departments across the state are facing recruitment and retention challenges. This plan would help lessen these barriers as we continue to prioritize public safety in every corner of Michigan.”
The refundable credit ensures that even those with little or no state income tax liability would receive a full benefit, making the support accessible and impactful for all volunteer personnel.
“Having served as both a paramedic and a volunteer firefighter, I understand firsthand the sacrifices our emergency responders make every day,” said Frisbie, who spent 40 years as a paramedic and ambulance service administrator before entering public office and served as a volunteer firefighter for Pennfield Township in Calhoun County and the village of Colon in St. Joseph County. “This tax credit is more than just financial relief – it’s a statement of our gratitude and a practical step toward ensuring our communities continue to have reliable, dedicated emergency services. It’s time we back these brave men and women with tangible support that recognizes their selfless commitment.”
HBs 4431-32 were referred to the House Finance Committee for consideration.
