Representative Whiteford Nominated for MIRS Legislator of the Year
RELEASE|December 22, 2020

Rep Mary Whiteford, of Casco Township, has been nominated the second straight year for House Legislator of the Year from MIRS, Michigan’s Independent Source of News and Information for Capitol coverage. Rep. Whiteford was nominated for “tackling nuts-and-bolts health care issues” during uncertain times.

“I am honored to be considered for this recognition from a publication that is as highly respected as MIRS,” Rep. Whiteford said. “Since taking office in 2016 I have worked tirelessly to put my experience as a registered nurse to work in the legislature.”

Among the many pieces of legislation sponsored by Rep. Whiteford, Chair of Health and Human Services Budget Committee, that have passed this term include establishing Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facilities (PRTFS) for Children under the age of 21. These critical facilities will provide necessary therapeutic treatments and service in a homelike environment to improve and stabilize a child’s condition until services are no longer needed.

Whiteford also received accolades for publicly condemning individuals who showed up at Department of Health and Human Services Director Robert Gordon’s Home. “While there are many policy decisions I disagree with Director Gordon on, we should all show decency and respect to one another’s privacy.”
