Representative Schuette Fighting for Additional Funds for Four Lakes Task Force and Flood Reduction Infrastructure
RELEASE|July 24, 2025

State Representative Bill G. Schuette today testified on a pair of funding requests for vital infrastructure and flood mitigation efforts in Midland and Gladwin counties as part of the ongoing state budget process.

Schuette is advocating for $10 million for the Four Lakes Task Force as they continue efforts to repair dams that failed and led to catastrophic flooding across the area in 2020.

“This devastating flooding destroyed the homes and lives of thousands in Midland County,” said Schuette when testifying before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor and Economic Opportunity. “This project has previously received investments from the state and federal sources, but we need additional funds to reduce the financial burden on those who lost so much in these floods.”

Schuette also requested $10 million to protect residents, families and job providers in the city of Midland with flood reduction infrastructure. The city is downstream from the dams and at the confluence of four different river systems, making it prone to “legacy flooding” that is more severe and has lasting impacts. Schuette pointed to other areas of the country that have aggressively implemented advancing technology to address legacy flooding concerns. In San Antonio, Texas, local and state leaders have committed resources to pump stations, floodways and debris removal to resolve these issues and protect the community. Schuette said similar infrastructure could be developed in Midland with the funding.

“If you think back to five years ago, in the middle of the pandemic, in May 2020, on the front page of any national or local newspaper was the town of Midland, Michigan completely flooded,” Schuette said. “Our iconic Tridge was buried under water. Residents across Midland County had to evacuate and the headquarters of one of the state’s largest hospitals was threatened.”

“We’re addressing two sides of a coin with these requests. We need to rebuild the dams that collapsed under this record rainfall and rebuild stronger so that this type of disaster does not happen again. We also must ensure that homeowners and property owners in Midland and Gladwin counties are able to once again enjoy a treasure of our region but do so in a way that minimizes the financial burden on many of those who lost everything.”
