State Rep. Mark Tisdel today called on Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to end her suspension of winter contact sports and allow student-athletes in Michigan schools to participate in all sports.

Tisdel, of Rochester Hills, said Michigan High School Athletic Association sports play a critical role in shaping the character of student-athletes – teaching them teamwork, sportsmanship and healthy lifestyle choices.

“I’ve heard from parents, coaches and students in our community – and no one understands why they aren’t being allowed to play,” Tisdel said. “Michigan’s high school football season just wrapped up this past weekend – proving that kids are able to safely participate in contact sports. There’s no reason to continue dampening the spirits of young athletes by delaying the start of the basketball, hockey, wrestling and competitive cheer seasons.”

Winter sports were scheduled to start Monday, Feb. 1, before the governor’s recent order extended the ban on contact sports through Feb. 21.
