State Rep. Mark Tisdel on Friday celebrated a new state grant for Rochester Hills that will help stabilize the Clinton River bank in Rochester Hills.

The city will receive a $142,480 Nonpoint Source (NPS) grant from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) for streambank stabilization for 375 feet of the Clinton River within the Cloverport Green Space.

“The Clinton River is an indispensable natural resource, and we need to preserve it,” said Tisdel, R-Rochester Hills. “A new state grant for Rochester Hills will help prevent erosion and pollution. This responsible resource management will help keep the river clean and beautiful and preserve our local environment.”

Nonpoint source pollution occurs when pollutants from land run off into waterways. The NPS grant program, funded under the federal Clean Water Act and the state Clean Michigan Initiative, helps manage watersheds to prevent and mitigate nonpoint source pollution. The grant for Rochester Hills is intended to help stop erosion and restore habitat.

The funding comes in addition to a watershed council support grant totaling $18,750, which EGLE recently awarded to the Clinton River Watershed Council in Rochester Hills. Funds can be used for education, outreach, watershed management efforts, and more.
