State Rep. Donni Steele this week testified before the House Judiciary Committee on legislation that would update Michigan’s penal code to strengthen penalties for individuals who commit acts of terrorism and ensure accountability when those acts result in loss of life.
House Bill 5831clarifies that terrorism must be committed knowingly and with premeditation and reinforces existing felony penalties, including life imprisonment or a term of years of at least 25 years, along with potential fines. It also makes clear that if a terrorist act results in death, the offender must be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
“This legislation makes it clear that acts of terrorism will be met with the strongest possible consequences, especially after the recent attack on our neighboring community of West Bloomfield at the Temple Israel,” said Steele (R-Orion Township). “When someone deliberately carries out violence that threatens lives and communities, there must accountability for their horrific actions.”
Steele said the fundamental responsibility of government is to keep our communities safe. I am working cohesively with the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department and Sheriff Bouchard to continue this mission.
