Rep. Smit’s Relentless Effort to Ensure Election Integrity
RELEASE|May 2, 2024
Contact: Rachelle Smit

Thank you for your interest in our nation’s most pressing political crisis right now: election integrity.

I want you to know that I take this issue seriously, as a former clerk myself I have experience running elections and firsthand knowledge of how the process works. I am proud that I have been able to fight for election integrity as the former Vice Chair of the House Elections Committee and now as the Chair of the House Election Integrity Committee.

During the 102nd legislative term I served as Vice Chair and voted “no” on the endless stream of laws passed by the Democrats as they sought to criminalize those who want to protect our elections and keep them safe.

Now that I am serving as Chair during this legislative term, my focus is to bring about good policies and laws that can be quickly passed to clean up our voter file, kick out illegal ballots from elections, and properly investigate serious and credible evidence of systemic voter fraud in our Michigan elections.

Below is a compiled list of what our office has done on these issues, proposed laws, resolutions, and even proposed impeachments as well as a rundown of my record on these issues, and the history of what I have been doing and will continue to protect your ballot and secure our elections.

GOOD BILLS SPONSORED

  • Rep. Smit sponsored these Election bills:
    • House Bill 4602 of 2025 – would prevent the Secretary of State’s office from entering into contracts that grant exclusive control over creating test decks with predetermined results to a single vendor or entity. The bill also precludes the Secretary of State from mandating or permitting the centralization of all ballot information for the state with a single vendor for the purpose of creating test decks. Additionally, the bill prevents the Secretary of State from restricting a Board of Election Commissioners from utilizing any source to create test decks with predetermined results.
    • House Bill Package 4652 & 4653 of 2025 – would require the Governor to announce the date of the special election to fill a vacancy in the legislature within 30 days after the vacancy occurs and to hold the special election within 180 days after the vacancy occurs
    • House Bill 4762 of 2023 – providing more security for early voting.  (This bill was referred to Committee on Elections and wasn’t taken up.)
    • House Bill 4875 of 2023 – to remove dead persons and those who are no longer voting after 6 years because they are no longer residents, from the voter file.  (This bill was referred to the Committee on Government Operations and wasn’t taken up.)
    • House Bill 4876 of 2023 – requiring data sharing with election information with the legislature.  (This bill was referred to the Committee on Government Operations and wasn’t taken up.)

FLOOR SPEECHES

  • SB 603:  https://fb.watch/uIee3iXXlQ/
  • SB 259: absent voters; tabulating absent voter ballots received up to 6 days after an election from an absent uniformed services voter or overseas voter; provide for.
    • Text of speech: Thank you Madam Speaker. As a former election clerk, I respect the choices of Michigan voters, but I do have serious concerns about the implementation of Proposal 2 in Michigan – a situation that’s now being made worse by the legislation we are voting on today, which goes far beyond what voters approved in November. Requiring clerks to count absentee ballots that arrive after election day, without a postmark, could allow people to fill out their ballots and send them in after election day is over and still have them counted – which is just senseless. I urge my colleagues to vote no on this legislation.
