State Rep. Josh Schriver today joined House Republicans in voting for major legislation aimed at lowering costs for working families and restoring affordability across the state of Michigan.

“People in our state are struggling,” said Schriver (R-Oxford). “They need more than temporary fixes and rebates. Residents are dealing with rising housing costs, higher utility bills, and the everyday burden of inflation. We need real reform that addresses the root causes of these challenges, and today, the House delivered.”

House Bills 5872-5879 establish a comprehensive affordability plan designed to reduce financial pressure on families, homeowners, and small businesses throughout Michigan. The legislation would eliminate the state property tax, saving the average family an estimated $900 annually. The package also includes mandatory utility rate rollbacks, leading to savings of around $500 when combined with the House Republican energy plan. This amounts to a total of $1400 back in the pockets of taxpayers. In addition, the plan repeals Michigan’s real estate transfer tax, reducing the financial burden on first-time homebuyers.

“House Republicans are taking meaningful action,” Schriver said. “We need to encourage people to establish roots in this state. Buying a home, raising a family, and building a future in Michigan should be achievable goals for every hardworking resident. Instead of growing government and asking taxpayers to carry a heavier burden, we’re creating an environment where people can thrive.”

Schriver emphasized that affordability remains one of the most urgent issues facing residents across the state, particularly for young families and seniors on fixed incomes.

“Through this legislation, Michigan is becoming the model for affordability,” Schriver said. “We need to do everything in our power to make sure we’re keeping costs down for the people of Michigan. That means lower taxes, lower utility bills, and policies that encourage meaningful investment and opportunity. The issue of affordability is crucial, and we’re delivering real results that will help people today and strengthen our state for the future.”
