State Rep. Kathy Schmaltz recently introduced a plan to provide vital support to Michigan seniors seeking to age comfortably and safely in their own homes.
Schmaltz, R-Jackson, said her plan would provide a tax credit for seniors aged 65 and over who make essential modifications to their residences to accommodate their evolving needs.
“Every senior deserves the opportunity to age gracefully in the comfort of their own home,” Schmaltz said. “My plan provides much-needed financial relief to Michigan seniors and their families, enabling them to make essential modifications that enhance safety and accessibility.”
Under House Bill 5632, seniors and their families will be eligible to claim a tax credit of up to $250 for expenses related to renovations such as installing ramps, bath bars, widening doors, wheelchair lifts, and stair lifts. This measure recognizes the importance of ensuring that Michigan seniors have the necessary resources to maintain their independence and dignity as they age.
House Bill 5632 also extends the tax credit to family members who incur expenses while making modifications to a senior’s home. This approach recognizes the crucial role that family caregivers play in supporting seniors.
“Many seniors want to age in place, but the financial strain of making the necessary home improvements can be daunting,” Schmaltz said. “My goal is to ease this burden by providing a tax credit that incentivizes and supports seniors and their families in creating safe and accessible homes that meet their needs.”
House Bill 5632 was referred to the House Tax Policy Committee for consideration.
