State Rep. Kathy Schmaltz this week introduced a bipartisan plan to improve the accuracy of autism spectrum disorder diagnoses in Michigan and ensure individuals receive the right care from the start.
Right now, Michigan allows certain mental health professionals to diagnose autism spectrum disorder without the supervision of a licensed psychologist. This policy has led to misdiagnoses, making it harder for individuals and families to access the right support.
“Every family navigating an autism diagnosis deserves clarity and confidence in the process,” Schmaltz said. “This plan ensures children and adults receive the right diagnosis and support, while still keeping care accessible.”
House Bill 4146 requires master-level mental health professionals to have at least three years of ongoing professional development and be supervised by a fully licensed psychologist before diagnosing autism spectrum disorder. Michigan is currently among a small number of Midwest states that do not meet these standards.
This reform has been endorsed by the Autism Alliance of Michigan and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, both of which advocate for more accurate diagnostic standards to improve patient outcomes.
“I want families to feel secure in their child’s diagnosis and the care that follows,” Schmaltz said. “By strengthening the standards for who can diagnose ASD, we will make sure Michigan families get the support they need from well-qualified professionals.”
House Bill 4146 has been referred to the House Health Policy Committee for further consideration.
