State Rep. John Roth today announced that Northwest Michigan Health Serviceshas secured the money necessary to expand dental access in Grand Traverse County. The clinic will provide necessary dental services to underserved communities, including veterans and patients with special needs. 

“For two years, my team and I worked diligently with the State Budget Office and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services to get the funding needed to support these important community services,” said Roth (R-Interlochen). “We spent hours in discussions with state officials and collaborative partners to identify a lasting solution. Today, I’m proud to announce that Northwest Michigan Health Services has obtained the funding needed to continue serving our community.” 

Northwest Michigan Health Services, Inc. (NMHSI) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit Federally Qualified Health Center that provides accessible medical, dental, and behavioral healthcare services throughout northwest Michigan. The organization serves patients regardless of insurance coverage or ability to pay, helping reduce barriers to quality healthcare in the communities it serves. 

A community clinic was launched in September 2023 to help address gaps in oral healthcare by connecting residents who experience barriers to care with accessible community dental services. Unfortunately, operating costs forced the clinic to close in January of 2026, leaving many community members with no certain access to dental care. 

With $2.9 million in funding secured by Roth in the 2027 state budget, Northwest Michigan Health Services will expand their current facility. With more exam rooms and operatories, the clinic will be able to serve more patients in need.  

“These services are a crucial investment,” Roth said. “After countless stalled conversations, I’m glad to see a real solution emerge. Northwest Michigan is a qualified entity, and I trust them to deliver the results that our community members deserve.”
