Rep. Rigas to A.G. Nessel: No more games
RELEASE|May 21, 2025
Contact: Angela Rigas

State Rep. Angela Rigas (R-Caledonia) today blasted Attorney General Dana Nessel over her second failure to produce requested itemized documents regarding the Flint Water Crisis prosecutions. Rigas, who is chair of the House Oversight Subcommittee on Weaponization of State Government, originally sent Nessel a records request on March 12 with a deadline of March 25. Nessel’s office replied to Rigas on the evening of March 25 with an extension request of eight weeks, which Rigas granted. The extension deadline was yesterday, May 20, 2025.

Nessel’s staff brought a flash drive to Rigas’ office on May 21 and also sent copies of the content of the flash drive to several Lansing media sources. The flash drive contained a mass array of unrelated documents that were never requested, mostly from Bill Schuette’s tenure as attorney general. Nessel also requested an additional four-week deadline to produce the records Rigas requested in March.

“Dana Nessel’s office sent us an incomplete, incoherent mess of documents on a password-protected flash drive like they were bringing us the Holy Grail,” Rigas said. “She then also sent certain members of the Lansing press corps the same documents, most of which had nothing to do with our original records request.”

Rigas originally requested the following from Nessel’s office in March:

  1. A comprehensive itemization of all billable hours, legal fees, and associated costs incurred by your office, including but not limited to personnel time, outside counsel, expert witnesses, and investigative services, related to the Flint Water Crisis prosecutions from the initiation of these efforts to the present date, March 11, 2025.
  2. A breakdown of all state funds allocated and expended on these cases, including any federal grants or other funding sources utilized.
  3. Copies of contracts, invoices, or memoranda of understanding with any third-party entities or individuals retained by your office for services related to these prosecutions.
  4. A summary of any reimbursements, settlements, or cost recoveries received by your office tied to these cases, if applicable.

Rigas said Nessel’s office only fulfilled partially on the third point, regarding contracts, invoices, and third-party memoranda.

“Dana Nessel and her office have consistently failed to meet deadline after deadline, and it’s unacceptable,” Rigas said. “She has failed to follow simple directions and comply with what has so clearly been requested. There will be no more extensions. No more games. This ends now.”
