State Rep. Angela Rigas (R-Caledonia) today led the Michigan House in passing essential school safety measures aimed at improving the Michigan’s confidential violence prevention tipline, OK2SAY. House Bill 4258, sponsored by Rigas, would require tips submitted to the line to be reported to the school or school district, local law enforcement, and any other appropriate authorities within 24 hours of receiving the tip.

“Timely action saves lives,” Rigas said. “This is a much-needed reform to ensure that no critical tip goes unanswered. The safety of our children must remain our top priority.”

OK2SAY allows students, parents, school personnel, and community members to confidentially report threats, violence, or criminal activity in schools. Under Rigas’ bill, tips will no longer face unnecessary delays in reaching those responsible for responding, ensuring faster intervention and support.

HB 4258 is part of a broader school safety package advanced by Michigan House Republicans. Other measures in the package include increased safety planning, adding tip line contact information to student ID cards, and improving the structure and frequency of active shooter drills.

“I’ve seen firsthand the devastating impact when reports go unaddressed,” Rigas said. “This legislation ensures students know that if they speak up, they’ll be heard—and that adults are ready to act to protect them.”

House Bill 4258 passed the House Wednesday afternoon 101-5.
