Lansing, MI — State Representative Angela Rigas, R-Caledonia, on Friday joined her House Republican colleagues to demand action on critical reforms to Michigan’s tipped wage and paid sick leave laws.
“House Democrats had a clear opportunity to prevent devastating consequences for Michigan’s small businesses and hardworking employees, yet they chose to do nothing,” Rigas said. “By making this statement, we are sending a message that we will not stand by while political games take precedence over the livelihoods of Michiganders.”
Despite repeated calls from House Republicans for solutions to protect workers, small businesses, and Michigan’s economy, House Democrats refused to take meaningful action. Instead they’ve focused on letting criminals out of prisons, securing drivers licenses for illegal immigrants, and raising fees for all state residents.
At issue are proposed changes to Michigan’s tipped wage and paid sick leave laws, which have been the subject of ongoing legal and legislative debates. Without legislative action, businesses could face significant cost increases, potentially leading to reduced hours, layoffs, or closures for many small businesses that rely on tipped labor.
“Our small business owners, waitstaff, and hospitality workers deserve certainty and stability, not political stalling,” Rigas said. “I stand with my Republican colleagues in demanding that House Democrats take responsibility and act now to protect the people we serve.”
House Republicans have consistently called for commonsense, bipartisan solutions to support Michigan’s workforce while also protecting small businesses from undue financial strain. The Democratic leadership’s refusal to bring solutions forward, despite months of warning and negotiation, left Republicans with no choice but to take a stand.
