State Rep. Dave Prestin today voted for a planned recreational upgrade in Schoolcraft County that he worked to secure in the Legislature.
Within House Bill 4238 is grant funding to:
- Expand the Manistique Lakeshore Campground: The project will add a 4-acre parcel of land on U.S.-2 adjacent to the Lakeshore Campground in the City of Manistique on Lake Michigan. This acquisition will allow the camping area to expand significantly. The campground features sites with full hook-up, pull-through sites, and rustic tent-only sites. The park includes a beach, pavilion, playground, and boardwalk. The purchase will also allow the development of a trailhead on U.S.-2 for the Iron Belle Trail.
Money in the Natural Resources Trust Fund comes from revenues generated by the development of minerals on state land – not taxpayer money – and is distributed on an annual basis in partnership with local governments. The money must be used for land acquisition or recreational development projects, according to the Michigan Constitution. The trust fund program dates back to the 1970s.
The recommendations within HB 4238 advance to the Senate for further consideration.
Dave Prestin is serving his first term in the Michigan House. Prestin serves on the House Committee on Natural Resources, Environment, Tourism and Outdoor Recreation.
