Rep. O’Malley fights to give local corrections officers same benefits as other law enforcement
RELEASE|June 11, 2020

State Rep. Jack O’Malley, of Lake Ann, this week testified before the House Commerce and Tourism Committee on his plan to give corrections officers the same benefits as other local police officers and firefighters.

The bill would allow corrections officers to engage in an arbitration process during disputes at the local level. This compulsory arbitration was put in place to help police and fire fighters, as they are not permitted to strike. However, corrections officer can neither strike nor engage in arbitration. This bill levels the playing field and provides the same resources as other law enforcement.

“Corrections officers incredibly are hard-working people who deserve the same treatment as other law enforcement officers,” O’Malley said. “These professionals are forced to balance between being the voice of authority, ensuring order within our jails, and playing the role of counselor. There should be no question that they deserve the same benefits as our other first responders.”

House Bill 5623 remains in committee for further consideration.
