State Rep. Luke Meerman (R-Coopersville) welcomed Fire Chief Travis Kroll of the Coopersville Polkton Fire Department to the Michigan House of Representatives’ annual 9-11 Memorial Ceremony in the House chamber on Thursday.

The ceremony included the ringing of a fire bell in memory of every first responder and public safety officer who died honorably in the line of duty throughout Michigan in the past year.

During this annual tradition, legislators invite first responders and members of the military from their communities to be their guests for the service.

“We’re forever in debt to our local public safety heroes who respond to every call for help in our community. It’s a pleasure to have the opportunity to visit with Chief Kroll and thank him personally for his service to my hometown,” Meerman said. “It’s refreshing to come together in the House chamber for something that we can all agree on, regardless of political affiliation, and that’s gratitude for those who gave it all to keep us safe.

“September 11 is a fitting time for this ceremony as we continue to remember and honor the heroes who responded to the tragic attacks on America 24 years ago today.”

Under Chief Kroll’s charge, the CPFD protects the City of Coopersville and Polkton Township. In total, the department provides fire and emergency services protection for about 7,400 residents and 40,000 daily commuters on I-96.
