West Michigan representative remains committed to standing up for local families, homeowners, and students
Rep. Luke Meerman (R-Coopersville) today issued the following statement to his local communities reporting his thoughts on the governor’s State of the State address earlier this week:
“Rising costs remain at the forefront of my constituents’ concerns which means it’s my chief concern as well. House Republicans have led the way in delivering results for Michigan’s working families since regaining majority last year. We’ve proven that cutting waste from the state budget can ensure real tax relief and prevent unnecessary increases. We must continue that.
“I’m encouraged to hear the governor agrees with us that property tax relief is a must, but her plan doesn’t go far enough. My colleagues and I will be fighting for real, meaningful savings to make homeownership more affordable throughout Michigan.”
Meerman has long been an advocate for lowering energy costs throughout Ottawa, Muskegon and Kent counties, and said that the failed energy mandates must be addressed to make life more affordable for his neighbors.
“Plain and simple, energy costs are too high and our power is unreliable. No matter what the governor claims about her green energy agenda – the fact is that it has caused rate increases. The rest of the nation is moving away from Biden’s failed green energy efforts, yet Michigan continues to lean into them under Whitmer’s leadership. I know that’s not what the people I represent want. That’s why I joined my colleagues in partnering with the Trump administration to keep power plants online in Michigan. It’s time for the tide to turn in favor of Michigan families.”
Having previously led a school safety task force in the 2021-22 legislative term, Meerman said it’s critical to ensure school safety and mental health funding remains a priority as Lansing embarks on budgeting for the next school year.
“While I’m proud of the bipartisan education budget agreement we reached for our current school year, it was an uphill battle to undo democrat cuts to school safety from last term. I personally worked to ensure school safety and mental health programs were fully funded after years of neglect. I’ll be getting in the way if the governor tries to go backward on that.
“As a dad, stronger parents’ rights in schools are important to me. That’s why I fought for increased transparency from our teachers and administrators, and why I will continue to stand up to education bureaucrats.”
