Resolution calls for immediate end to inadequate food contract

State Rep. David Martin of Davison today testified before the House Military, Veterans and Homeland Security Committee in support of a resolution demanding better food service for 1,000 Michigan National Guard members deployed to Washington, D.C.

Martin, a U.S. Air Force veteran, said the resolution calls on the National Guard Bureau to immediately end the woefully inadequate current food contract and instead provide a per diem food allowance.

“Many of us have seen the disgusting reports about the ongoing issues of undercooked, cold and contaminated food being provided to Michigan’s National Guard members in Washington D.C.,” Martin said. “It is shameful and unacceptable for our men and women in uniform to be treated in this way. Our National Guard members deserve to receive the basic human need of safe and sufficient food while protecting our nation’s Capitol.”

The Michigan National Guard service members have been on duty in the nation’s capital since mid-January to assist with security. The resolution Martin is backing calls for the service members to receive a per diem food allowance backdated to the start of the mobilization.

The measure is House Resolution 47. It was approved by the committee after today’s testimony, advancing it to the full House for consideration.
