State Rep. David Martin is standing up for the children and families of Flint who are affected by the Flint water crisis, pushing back against the exorbitant amount requested as attorney fees in the proposed settlement of a lawsuit brought by residents.

Martin, of Davison, said of the proposed $641.25 million settlement, attorneys have requested $202 million in legal fees, 31 percent of the total settlement amount. Today, Martin introduced a resolution in the Michigan House declaring opposition to funds being disbursed to attorneys instead of the affected families of Flint.

“First and foremost, money from this settlement should go to Flint children and families who have had their lives forever changed by the decisions made during this crisis – not the out-of-state attorneys who capitalized on this tragic situation,” Martin said. “The state must take action to ensure such a disproportionate amount of funds are not awarded to attorneys over residents.”

House Resolution 56 was co-sponsored by the entire Genesee County coalition and referred to the House Government Operations Committee for consideration.
