Rep. David W. Martin (R-Davison) and the Michigan House today approved positive changes to educator licensing and fees. Martin’s bill, House Bill 4151, would streamline qualifications for teachers by allowing endorsements to be added for each subject area when they pass the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification in a particular subject.

“Cutting red tape for aspiring teachers is a positive step forward,” Martin said. “These changes will allow school districts to fill vacancies with qualified individuals quickly and efficiently. I want to thank my colleagues for supporting this bill and our schools.”

Martin’s bill is part of a larger education package introduced by House Republicans in February. The package largely focuses on efficiency and filling educator vacancies, including waiving licensing fees for teachers, allowing local teaching certifications, and revised guidelines for teacher preparation programs.

“We’re making common sense improvements to teacher certification and licensing that have been needed for a long time,” Martin said. “I’m thankful these bills passed the House, and I hope the Senate and governor will follow our lead.”
