Rep. Marino’s resolution urges Michiganders to shop local
RELEASE|October 3, 2019

State Rep. Steve Marino, chair of the House Commerce and Tourism Committee, today introduced a resolution declaring October 4th through the 6th as “Buy Nearby” Weekend in Michigan.

Marino said purchasing goods and services locally leads to a positive ripple effect on Michigan communities, encouraging small business growth and more job opportunities while strengthening the state’s economy.

“We can’t underestimate the power of shopping local,” said Marino, of Harrison Township. “Local businesses are the cornerstone of our Michigan economy and our communities.”

“Buy Nearby” is an annual statewide promotion for shopping at local retail outlets instead of alternatives via the internet. The Buy Nearby project estimates that if Michigan buyers made 1 out of every 10 purchases at a Michigan retailer, an additional $1.2 billion in economic activity could follow and nearly 10,600 jobs could be created.

Buy Nearby Weekend runs Oct. 4 through 6.
