State Rep. Matt Maddock (R-Milford) today called for deep budget cuts after last Friday’s Consensus Revenue Estimating Conference (CREC) reported that state revenue was projected to go down. The conference came just days after the Michigan Senate passed an $86 billion budget which the state will likely not be able to sustain with existing revenue sources. Maddock, who is vice chair of the House Appropriations Committee, believes there are bright sides to the decrease in revenue.

“I’m actually glad there will be less taxes collected by the state,” Maddock said. “It forces the Democrats to do something they never do: cut budgets because we’re not going to let them increase taxes.”

The Democrat-controlled Senate’s proposed budget amounts to $86 billion—an increase of $3.5 billion over the previous budget. The state budget was just $58 billion when Governor Gretchen Whitmer assumed office in 2019.

“The state budget has grown by $28 billion dollars since Whitmer entered office,” Maddock said. “We had a $9 billion surplus in 2023, and the Democrats blew through it like they were sending it to Ukraine. Now, the Democrat Senate wants to increase the budget by another $3.5 billion without a transparent plan on how to fund it. It’s very clear their agenda is another tax hike on Michigan’s working class.”
