State Rep. Rylee Linting today voted on a plan that will cut the state income tax, helping return money to hardworking people throughout the Downriver community.

House Bill 4170 would reverse a Democrat tax hike from last year, which raised the individual income tax rate from 4.05% to 4.25%. Because of large state revenue growth that exceeded inflation, an existing law had automatically lowered the rate to 4.05%. However, state Attorney General Dana Nessel declared that this reduction was only temporary, and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer pressed forward with the higher tax rate baked into state budget plans.

“Many people I talk with are living paycheck to paycheck and trying to deal with high costs for groceries, gas, childcare, housing and many other everyday expenditures,” said Linting, of Grosse Ile. “They’re struggling with their own budgets. They shouldn’t be tasked with propping up an increasingly large state government budget. This plan provides people with real relief. It allows workers and small business owners to keep more of what they earn and helps make life more affordable, which was a priority when I came to Lansing to serve our Downriver community.”

HB 4170 lowers the income tax back to 4.05% and clarifies law to ensure future tax cuts automatically triggered by increased state revenues will be permanent.

The bill now moves to the Senate for consideration.
