Rep. Lightner votes to better inform students about career, educational options
RELEASE|February 2, 2022

State Rep. Sarah Lightner and the Michigan House this week approved a plan to better inform Michigan students about their career and education options following high school.

Lightner, of Springport, said the plan would make sure young people are made aware of career paths that involve skilled trades and public service, in addition to those that require four-year degrees and graduate school.

“Success in life is not dependent on spending four years or more and tens of thousands of dollars on a four-year degree,” Lightner said. “Careers in the trades are in demand and they offer a competitive salary. Young people should be presented with all of their options.”

Under House Bill 4953, Michigan high-school students would receive information describing options for post-secondary education, vocational training, and public service avenues that students can consider as a career when looking to the future. It would include information about college graduation rates, average education costs, the most in-demand occupations, and average salaries for occupations across Michigan the preceding year.

House Bill 4953 now advances to the Senate for further consideration.
