State Rep. Sarah Lightner and the Michigan House today approved a plan to prohibit experimentation on fetal tissue from aborted babies.
The legislation was introduced after the Biden administration rolled back research restrictions last year.
“The dignity of human life should always be respected,” said Lightner, of Springport. “Allowing anyone to perform experiments using tissue and body parts from aborted babies is disgusting and unnecessary. In this day and age, medical research can be conducted without these grotesque and unethical practices.”
House Bills 5558-59 would prohibit research on a dead embryo, fetus or neonate obtained from an abortion and ban donations of remains from aborted babies. Knowingly performing such experiments would be a felony punishable by up to five years in prison.
HBs 5558-59 now advance to the Senate for further consideration.
