Rep. Lightner: Budget agreement reached by the Legislature and Governor
RELEASE|September 29, 2025

LANSING, Mich. Rep. Sarah Lightner today said House Republicans delivered a budget agreement reached with the Legislature and governor that secures major wins for Michigan families, cutting waste, funding schools, fixing roads, and making communities safer.

Lightner, who chairs the House Judiciary Committee, said the agreement forces Lansing to live within its means while still making key investments families count on.

“The reason this deal exists is because House Republicans refused to accept Lansing’s bad habits,” Lightner said. “We drew a line, cut away the bloat, and delivered a budget that protects families, respects taxpayers, funds our schools, and gives law enforcement the resources they deserve. That’s accountability. That’s law-and-order.”

The framework redirects more than $5 billion in waste, fraud, and abuse into public priorities. Nearly $2 billion is committed to repairing Michigan’s local roads and bridges. A new $115 million Public Safety Trust Fund will strengthen police and first responders, while significant resources are also directed to Michigan classrooms to ensure students and teachers have the support they need.

“As Judiciary Chair, I deal with the fallout of crime every day,” Lightner said. “This agreement is a win for victims, for communities that want safer streets, for families who depend on strong schools, and for taxpayers who are sick of Lansing wasting their money. We’re proving government can work for the people when it’s forced to focus on priorities that matter.”
