Rep. Bronna Kahle today announced a new contest geared toward helping Lenawee County 4th graders learn about and participate in state government.
Kahle, of Adrian, is sponsoring a contest called ‘There Ought To Be A Law.’ She is encouraging 4th graders to work together with their classmates and submit an idea for a new Michigan state law.
“This contest will be a wonderful way to get students involved and help them learn about state government,” Kahle said. “It also provides them with a great opportunity to think about how they can make a positive difference in the lives of their families, friends and neighbors.”
The contest opens Sept. 15th and ideas must be submitted as a classroom by Oct. 30th. Proposed ideas should be emailed to [email protected] Be sure to include the idea for a new state law, details about why it’s a good idea, the name of the school and classroom teacher, and contact information including a phone number and email address.
The winning idea will be announced in November. The plan will then be drafted into a bill and submitted as a proposal for consideration in the Michigan House of Representatives. If health and safety conditions allow it, the winning class will be invited to the state Capitol to advocate for their proposal.
“Students should approach this just like a legislator would,” Kahle said. “Once their class has identified a proposed solution to a problem – their idea for a new state law – then they should think it through. Why is it a good idea? How would it help people? Who would support the idea? Who would oppose it? Getting involved will help our 4th grade students across Lenawee make an impact on their community and inspire others to do the same.”
