State Rep. Josh Schriver (R-Oxford) today issued the following statement after House Bill 5836 was reported out of the House Committee on Government Operations with unanimous support:
“Today, the committee took decisive action to correct a serious error in Michigan’s calendar by advancing House Bill 5836.
“This bill repeals the state’s designation of Cesar Chavez Day, drawing a clear line that Michigan will not use its official calendar to honor individuals whose legacy is now deeply tainted by credible and extensively documented allegations of sexual abuse.
“A March 18, 2026 investigation by The New York Times detailed accounts from multiple women, including individuals who say they were abused as minors, along with corroborating evidence and reporting that has prompted institutions across the country to reconsider how Chavez is publicly commemorated.
“State government should not ignore facts when they come to light. Continuing to officially honor Chavez sends the wrong message to victims and undermines the standards of accountability we claim to uphold.
“This legislation does not erase history or diminish the farmworker movement. It ensures that Michigan’s official recognitions reflect integrity, consistency, and respect for those who have been harmed.
“I appreciate my colleagues for unanimously advancing this bill and look forward to continuing the conversation.”
