State Rep. Mark Huizenga today announced the city of Rockford has been awarded a state grant to expand its infrastructure and provide clean water to more local families.

“The system expansion will be a tremendous benefit for local residents,” said Huizenga, of Walker. “Water is one of life’s most basic necessities, and this grant will reach more families in Rockford and Algoma Township with clean, drinkable water.”

The grant totaling nearly $4.5 million will fund an expansion of the Rockford municipal water distribution system to connect homes in the city and Algoma Township. The project is slated to construct 1.8 miles of public watermain to connect additional residences to the city water system instead of wells.

The Consolidation and Contamination Risk Reduction grant was awarded by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy as part of the Clean Water Plan to provide water free from contaminants like per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).
