State Rep. Mike Hoadley today said House Republicans scored major wins for Michigan taxpayers in a budget framework that reins in wasteful spending, delivers historic investments in road repairs, and provides meaningful tax relief for working families.
Michigan is just days away from the state’s budget deadline without an agreement in place. Thursday night, state leaders announced a deal on key components of a deal that would allow the budget to be finalized ahead of next week. Several top priorities advanced by Hoadley earlier this year were included in the agreement.
Hoadley, who voted for the first pieces of the deal Thursday, said House Republicans are forcing state government to cut back its bloated budget and focus on priorities that matter to people. In the agreement, House Republicans, Senate Democrats and Gov. Whitmer all committed to eliminating waste, fraud, and abuse in Lansing and redirecting those funds into fixing roads and tax relief for working people.
“Government has grown too much, too fast, and taxpayers deserve better value for their hard-earned money,” Hoadley said. “This plan will make Lansing live within its means while still delivering the services people count on.”
The deal secures nearly $2 billion for repairing Michigan’s local roads and bridges, a historic investment that will make driving safer and strengthen the state’s economy. It also incorporates President Trump’s ‘no tax on tips, overtime and Social Security’ plan at the state level, delivering relief to more than 500,000 Michiganders.
“Families are being squeezed by high costs, and they deserve a break,” Hoadley said. “We are making sure this budget delivers relief while finally making the state prioritize the basics, like safer roads, stronger communities, and respect for taxpayers.”
Negotiations on the state budget will continue over the weekend ahead of Tuesday’s deadline. The components of the road repair plan, education budget, and tax relief Hoadley has voted for all currently await action in the state Senate.
