State Rep. Mike Hoadley today celebrated Governor Whitmer’s signature on a piece of legislation that excuses missing school days that were lost due to extreme storms that occurred throughout March.
“The damage from these storms was severe,” said Hoadley (R-Au Gres). “Thousands of people up north lost power, and many roads were simply inaccessible.”
The bill, introduced by Rep. Parker Fairbairn and backed by Hoadley, allows certain school districts statewide to excuse up to four additional school days missed because of the severe weather. The waiver applies only to closures on March 12, 13, 16, and 17.
“This situation demanded swift action, and we delivered,” Hoadley said. “We quite literally could not send our kids to school in those conditions. The state had to recognize that reality. Without this legislation, we would be punishing families for circumstances completely outside of their control. The governor’s signing of this bill demonstrates that we were able to work together to listen to the voices of Northern Michigan.”
