Legislation modeled after state and federal income tax extensions
State Rep. Roger Hauck today testified on his proposal granting additional time to those wishing to file residential and business property tax appeals.
Hauck, of Union Township, pointed out in comments before the House Local Government and Municipal Finance Committee that some Michigan property owners have only recently started to receive their assessments – if they’ve received them at all – due to issues surrounding the ongoing COVID-19 public health emergency.
“With assessing units having been closed for almost two months and with some boards not being able to complete their work until much later than in the past, we have never seen so many taxpayers unable to obtain their final assessment information,” Hauck said. “Some taxpayers – especially ones with small businesses – have not even been able to meet with their advisors and make informed decisions about possible appeals. It makes sense to push everything back and provide people with a fair process as they are dealing with unprecedented times.”
Currently, the deadline to file appeals is May 31 for business owners and July 31 for residential property owners. House Bill 5766, which was reported to the House Ways and Means Committee for consideration, would extend both to Aug. 31 on a one-time basis.
In late March, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer extended state and city income tax filings from April 15 to July 15 through executive order.
