Harris will also serve on Government Operations, Economic Competitiveness, Judiciary committees

State Rep. Mike Harris on Thursday announced that Speaker Matt Hall has appointed him to serve on five legislative committees in the 2025-2026 term.

Harris, R-Waterford, will chair the influential Insurance Committee. He served as Republican vice chair of the committee in the 2023-2024 term and helped advance efforts to crack down on insurance fraud, which drives up premiums. Harris said he looks forward to helping Michiganders access affordable, reliable insurance coverage with strong consumer protections.

“Insurance touches every area of life in our state; it can be a financial lifeline for Michiganders when they need to see a doctor, rebuild their homes, or repair their cars,” Harris said. “Patients, homeowners, drivers, and all Michigan residents want high-quality insurance policies they can afford. As I lead the House Insurance Committee, I’ll work to expand access to good insurance, prevent fraud, and give consumers the peace of mind they deserve.”

Harris will serve as majority vice chair of the Government Operations Committee and a member of the Economic Competitiveness Committee and the Judiciary Committee. He will also sit on the Legislative Council, a joint body of representatives and senators overseeing key agencies and offices within the Michigan Legislature, including the Corrections Ombudsman, the Veterans’ Facility Ombudsman, and the Legislative Service Bureau, which helps lawmakers write bills and resolutions.

“I’m excited to bring the voices of Oakland County residents to some of the most critical issues facing our state,” Harris said. “With my new committee assignments, I’ll tackle the issues that matter to the people of our community. I’ll work to support insurance quality and affordability, make government work better for taxpayers, expand economic opportunities, and keep our communities safe.”

Harris, a retired police sergeant who served 26 years in law enforcement, highlighted the important work of the Judiciary Committee.

“The Judiciary Committee handles policy for our courts and criminal justice system,” Harris said. “I’ve spent my career protecting our communities and arresting criminals, and on the House Judiciary Committee, I’ll keep working to support our law enforcement officers as they keep the people of Michigan safe from violence, theft, and other crime.”

Harris is the majority caucus whip, a key member of the House leadership team.

Harris has served in the House since May of 2022. He represents the 52nd House District, which covers part of Oakland County: the cities of Lake Angelus and the Village of Clarkston, Independence Township, and portions of Springfield and Waterford townships.
