State Rep. Jaime Greene, vice chair of the House Education Committee, is backing a bipartisan plan to ensure every high school in Michigan offers at least one computer science class by the 2027-28 school year.

Greene, R-Richmond, said the legislation is designed to help Michigan students gain the skills they need for the growing tech industry.

“Providing computer science education in every high school will prepare our students for the future and open up opportunities in high-demand careers,” Greene said. “This is an important step in making sure our students are ready for the challenges and opportunities of the digital age.”

House Bill 5649 would require all Michigan public high schools to offer at least one computer science course, ensuring students across the state have access to essential skills and knowledge.

“Computer science is not just about coding; it’s about problem-solving, critical thinking, and understanding the digital world we live in,” Greene said. “By offering these courses, we will empower our students with knowledge and skills that are essential for their personal and professional growth.”

Greene voted for House Bill 5649 during this week’s Education Committee meeting, helping advance the measure to a full House for further consideration.
