State Rep. Phil Green is working to bring vital funding to Genesee County for crucial recreational upgrades.

Green today voted to advance House Bill 4238, which will fund various projects throughout the state. Within the proposal is a $300,000 funding grant for further development at Richfield Park and the Iron Belle Trail. The upgrades include improved accessibility and capacity at the park, restroom facilities, informational kiosks, ADA-compliant spaces, and more.

“These recreational facilities are assets to our communities and these upgrades will make our area an even better place to live, work and raise a family,” Green said. “I am excited to see the improvements that are made, and I will continue fighting for these opportunities for our communities in the Legislature.”

The trust fund investment will receive a $105,500 match from Genesee County for a total cost of $405,500 for the project.

Money in the Natural Resources Trust Fund comes from revenues generated by the development of minerals on state land – not taxpayer money – and is distributed on an annual basis in partnership with local governments. The money must be used for land acquisition or recreational development projects, according to the Michigan Constitution. The trust fund program dates back to the 1970s.

The recommendations within HB 4238 advance to the Senate for further consideration after receiving overwhelming support in the House.
