Rep. Annette Glenn, R-Midland, today said she will continue fighting for tax relief “because that is what Michigan families need” to battle inflation.

Glenn’s statement comes after Gov. Whitmer vetoed a Legislature-approved tax relief plan for the third time this year. The latest plan rejected by Whitmer would have lowered the state’s individual income tax rate and increased exemptions, with additional income tax savings for families, seniors and military veterans. Overall savings for Michiganders would have been about $2.5 billion a year – manageable because state government has more revenue than previously expected.

“Gas costs more than $5 a gallon and prices continue to soar at the grocery store. Inflation is crushing family budgets,” Glenn said. “People need financial relief – not political gamesmanship. The state’s elected leaders, including the governor, have an obligation to work together, lower taxes and allow people to keep more of their own money as soon as possible – because that is what Michigan families need.”

Glenn said the most immediate concern now is helping motorists save money at the gas pump.

In early April, Whitmer vetoed a measure that as originally intended would have paused collection of Michigan’s 27 cents per gallon fuel tax for six months. The plan was undermined when Democrats in the Senate refused to allow the measure to take effect immediately.

In March, Whitmer vetoed a plan that would have lowered the state’s individual income tax rate from the current 4.25 percent to 3.9 percent. Seniors and families with children would have had additional savings.
