Rep. Glenn: Legislature approves funding for Midland County recreation projects
RELEASE|July 6, 2022
Contact: Annette Glenn

Rep. Annette Glenn recently helped lead the Michigan Legislature’s approval of funding to assist three Midland County recreation projects.

The projects are included in the annual Natural Resources Trust Fund legislation now awaiting Gov. Whitmer’s signature. Money in the Natural Resources Trust Fund comes from the development of minerals on state land – not general tax money — and is distributed on an annual basis in partnership with local governments. The money must be used for recreational development projects or land acquisition and cannot be used for other purposes, according to the Michigan Constitution.

The Midland area projects include:

Pere Marquette Rail-Trail: A $300,000 commitment will help renovate more than 2.5 miles of the trail and trailhead near Dublin Avenue in Midland. Improvements will include benches, signs and trail maps.

Tittabawassee River Pedestrian Corridor: A $300,000 investment will help create a pedestrian green space at Emerson Park in the city of Midland, improving the Tittabawassee riverfront at the confluence of Sturgeon Creek. Two accessible pathways will connect the area to the nearby Pere Marquette Rail-Trail.

Great Lakes Bay Regional Trail: Another $300,000 will help develop a one-mile extension of the Midland Township Walking Path, starting near Overlook Park to Stewart Road. The trail is part of the Great Lakes Bay Regional Trail connecting Midland, Bay City and Saginaw.

“Each of these projects help make Midland a special place to live or to come for a visit,” Glenn said. “These improvements will benefit our community and our families for decades to come.”

The projects were included in annual recommendations from the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund, which require approval and input from the Legislature. The Natural Resources Trust Fund program dates back to the 1970s.

The legislation is Senate Bill 1028.
