State Rep. Graham Filler today led the Michigan House in adopting a resolution condemning the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Filler, of DeWitt, said the ongoing attack on Ukraine is unprovoked and demonstrates a blatant violation of the Budapest Memorandum, a 1994 agreement between the United States, Russia, and Great Britain. As part of the agreement, Russia committed to “respect the independence and sovereignty and the existing borders of Ukraine” and “to refrain from the threat or use of force” against the country.

“The scenes and the videos we see coming out of Ukraine are horrific,” Filler said. “While we take our kids to school, work our jobs and go about our daily lives, the people of Ukraine are deciding whether they should take their kids and flee their homes to protect their families from bombings. It’s important for the people of Ukraine and the many Michiganders with Ukrainian roots to know that our state stands with them and condemns the unprovoked invasion of their country.”

A copy of Filler’s resolution, House Resolution 243, will be sent to the to president of the Russian Federation.

Filler’s father was born in Moldova, a country that neighbors Ukraine, and fled the region with his family during a previous time of war.
