State Rep. James DeSana, R-Carleton, introduced House Joint Resolution D on February 12, which would amend Michigan’s constitution to transition the state’s Legislature from full-time to part-time. The change would aim to create a more efficient and accountable government.

“Creating a part-time legislature is a significant step toward building a more efficient and effective state government,” said DeSana, R-Carleton. “This change would encourage legislators to focus on more pressing issues and ensure they are serving their constituents to the best of their ability. A part-time legislature would also align our government with multiple other states that have implemented this transition successfully and demonstrated how a full-time legislature is not a necessity for good policy making.”

“By adopting a part-time legislature, we can reduce unnecessary bureaucracy and encourage our elected state officials to be more engaged with their communities,” DeSana said. “The people deserve a government that is focused on effective results.”

House Joint Resolution D would amend Section 13 of Article IV of the state constitution, which would limit the legislative session to no more than 90 consecutive days starting in 2027 and every year following that. House Joint Resolution D was referred to House Committee on Government Operations. If passed in both chambers, it will be up to the people to vote on the resolution in the next general election.
