State Rep. James DeSana today called for a temporary 90-day suspension of Michigan’s gas tax to provide immediate relief at the pump for drivers across the state.

“Gas prices are approaching a ridiculous $5 per gallon, and Michiganders are struggling to keep up,” said DeSana (R-Carleton). “State government should be looking for every opportunity to ease the burden on families, not stand by while people are forced to pay more just to get to work, take their kids to school or buy groceries”

According to AAA, the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in Michigan was $4.84 as of Wednesday, up more than 70 cents from one month ago and more than $1.70 from the same time last year.

Michigan currently imposes a 52.4-cent-per-gallon tax on gasoline. DeSana said temporarily suspending the tax for 90 days would provide drivers with immediate relief as families continue to contend with elevated fuel prices.
