A package of bills introduced in part by state Rep. Nancy DeBoer (R-Holland) to improve safety standards in Michigan schools was signed into law today.

The bill was inspired by the findings of the bipartisan task force, which was established in 2021, prior to the representative’s election to the state House, by former Speaker Jason Wentworth in the wake of the Oxford school tragedy to determine policy solutions to prevent acts of violence against students and teachers. Four Republicans and four Democrats sat on the task force and offered their unique perspectives to improve school safety protocols and address student mental health needs.

“While I wasn’t a part of compiling the report, I have reviewed it extensively and it’s clear that there are many common-sense changes that must be put into place to protect our young people at school,” DeBoer said. “As a mother and a former educator, I felt very compelled to make sure those changes were actually made.”

The task force’s final report provided detailed recommendations based on information and perspectives gained during listening sessions and discussions with students, parents, teachers, administrators, law enforcement and behavioral health professionals.

The bipartisan policy changes signed into law today address holes in the system to better ensure school safety for Michigan kids. DeBoer’s portion of the plan, specifically, establishes the new School Safety and Mental Health Commission.

“The police are among our greatest allies when it comes to school safety,” DeBoer said. “Ensuring they are helping lead the charge when it comes to improving the safety of our schools is a no-brainer. Their invaluable involvement will make schools a much safer place for students, teachers and staff.”

The school safety bills are now Public Acts 263, 264, 270, 271 and 272 of 2024.
