State Rep. Cam Cavitt, R-Cheboygan, on Thursday released the following statement after voting against a measure to give illegal immigrants driver’s licenses. Several House Democrats joined House Republicans in rejecting the far-left plan, House Bill 4195:

“Having a driver’s license in our state is a privilege. You can’t illegally cross our border and break our laws and then expect to receive the same privileges afforded to U.S. citizens. This radical Democrat driver’s license plan was so unpopular last year that it couldn’t even get a vote during a Democrat trifecta. Yet, either out of dedication to far-left activism or devotion to bad policy ideas, Democrats made the mistake of trying this again.

“Last fall, the public was loud and clear on how illegal immigration should be handled. They elected House Republicans and President Trump to close our border and deport the dangerous gang members ravishing our communities. The public deserves to know exactly which of their elected officials, Republican or Democrat, think the state should give these criminals driver’s licenses.

“Foreign nationals with a legitimate state ID can drive in Michigan legally. If illegal immigrants bring their home-country IDs over the border with them, they can technically drive. There should be no reason for the state to use taxpayer dollars to give drivers licenses to criminals who probably can already drive as it is.”
