State Rep. Ken Borton and the Michigan House of Representatives on Wednesday approved a plan to prohibit experimentation on fetal tissue from aborted babies.

Borton helped introduce House Bills 5558 and 5559, which would prohibit research performed on an organ, tissue or cell taken from a dead embryo, fetus or neonate obtained from an abortion. Knowingly performing such research would be a felony punishable by up to five years in prison. The legislation would also prohibit donating fetal remains for research after an abortion.

“As a society, we should be helping mothers choose life for their babies,” said Borton, of Gaylord. “Banning experiments with aborted babies shines a clear light on the importance of protecting human lives from abortion. Our plan takes another step forward for life.”

HBs 5558 and 5559 now advance to the Senate for consideration.
