State Rep. Ken Borton today supported a state budget that prioritizes responsible spending, protects taxpayers, and preserves the outdoor traditions that are important to communities across Northern Michigan.
“This budget reflects a commonsense approach to governing,” Borton said. “We’re funding the essential services people count on while eliminating waste and making sure taxpayers get the greatest value from every dollar the state spends.”
The $75.2 billion budget reduces state spending compared to the previous fiscal year while maintaining funding for core government services. The plan curbs waste, fraud, and abuse without imposing new tax increases and strengthens oversight of public assistance programs to help ensure benefits are directed to those who qualify.
The fiscal year 2027 budget also protects Michigan’s hunters and anglers by preventing new state fees from being imposed on hunting and fishing licenses, helping keep the outdoors accessible and affordable for sportsmen across the state. The budget also does not increase the fees for boat registration.
“Hunting and fishing are a way of life for many people throughout Northern Michigan and across the state,” Borton said. “The Michigan Department of Natural Resources shouldn’t balance its budget by asking sportsmen to pay more every time they want to enjoy Michigan’s great outdoors. This budget protects those traditions while respecting the taxpayers who make them possible.”
