State Rep. Timmy Beson on Monday was named Freshman Legislator of the Year by Michigan Information and Research Service (MIRS), a leading political newsletter covering state government.

“It is my honor to serve the people of Bay County in the Legislature, and this award recognizes my community focus,” said Beson, of Bangor Township. “Whether helping local residents and small businesses or supporting the police, the needs of our community are the priority in all my work.”

In the MIRS podcast announcing the award, reporters cited Beson’s work ethic and several of his legislative initiatives. His advocacy for small businesses, his work on the budget through his service on the influential House Appropriations Committee, and his efforts to help retain and recruit police officers were all mentioned as reasons for the recognition.

Already Beson has spearheaded two bills that have been signed into law. House Bill 4047 appropriated resources to combat COVID-19 and aid Michigan’s economic recovery, although Gov. Gretchen Whitmer did remove portions of the budget that would have made a deposit in the unemployment trust fund and provided tax and fee relief for businesses hurt by the pandemic. HB 4700 renamed a bridge in southern Bay County in honor of Sgt. Kristopher Gould, who was killed in Afghanistan.

A third bill introduced by Beson passed the Legislature with bipartisan support but was vetoed by Whitmer. HB 4501 would have waived fines for corrected, first-time workplace violations and reimbursed workplace fines assessed under unconstitutional orders.

Beson has shepherded three other bills through the House of Representatives and to the Senate. HB 4821 would provide for the upkeep and maintenance of the Michigan Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Monument, which honors fallen police officers, and HB 5132 would allow veterans and others with relevant experience to enroll in a police academy without an associate degree. HB 4683 is part of a broad package to increase ethics requirements for legislators and other state officials.

Beson represents the 96th House District, which includes the cities of Bay City and Essexville and the townships of Bangor, Frankenlust, Hampton, Kawkawlin, Merritt, Monitor and Portsmouth.
